Global wind power capacity grows rapidly in 2007, but Japan lags

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows windmills in California. Global wind power capacity that was newly installed in 2007 totaled 20,000 megawatts, an amount equivalent to capacity generated by 15 large nuclear power plants, but Japan lags in the field, according to a recent report compiled by the Brussels-based Global Wind Energy Council. The year's newly installed wind power in Japan came to 139 megawatts, only one-38th the U.S. figure.
