China announces 17.6% rise in military spending
BEIJING, China - The Chinese government announced March 4 it will increase defense spending by 17.6 percent in 2008, marking the 20th straight year of double-digit growth in its military budget. Jiang Enzhu (in this photo), a spokesman for China's National People's Congress, or parliament, told reporters that the government will spend 417,769 million yuan (about $58.79 billion) on its military this year, but its aim is purely defensive.
