Fukuda, Peru President Alan Garcia meet, 1st summit in 9 years

TOKYO, Japan - Japan's Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda (R) and Peruvian President Alan Garcia pose for photographers prior to their talks at the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo on March 17, the first summit between the two countries in nine years. Bilateral ties chilled after former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori fled to Japan in November 2000. Despite repeated requests from Peru, Japan refused to extradite Fujimori on corruption and other charges, citing his Japanese citizenship and the lack of an extradition treaty between the two countries.
