China announces start of Olympic torch relay

BEIJING, China - Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) hands the Olympic torch to a Chinese athlete in a ceremony marking the arrival of the flame from Athens at Tiananmen Square in Beijing on March 31. Hu announced the start of the Olympic torch relay at the ceremony. The flame will be carried to Almaty, Kazakhstan, on April 1 on the first leg of the longest Olympic torch relay ever, covering 137,000 kilometers and five continents, before reaching the main Olympic stadium in Beijing for the start of the games on Aug. 8.

Olympic torch arrives in Beijing

BEIJING, China - The Olympic torch (C) arrived in Beijing on March 31 aboard an airplane from Athens, following a flame-lighting ceremony in Greece last week. At right in the middle is Liu Qi, the president of the Beijing Olympics organizing committee, who carried a lantern carrying the flame from Greece.
