KAGOSHIMA, Japan - Visitors marvel at a sand artwork on May 2 at the 21st annual sand festival in Minamisatsuma, a city in Kagoshima Prefecture famous for its sand dunes. The festival, which features 80 sand statues of various sizes, the largest 4 meters tall, will run through May 6.

Harada died on June 11, 2012, of leukemia at his home in Kumamoto City. He was 77.
