Okinawa observes 63rd anniversary of end of battle
ITOMAN, Japan - Local people pray for the victims of the Battle of Okinawa at the Peace Memorial Park on a seaside hill in the city of Itoman, Okinawa Prefecture, on June 23, the 63rd anniversary of the end of the Battle of Okinawa in the closing stages of World War II. More than 200,000 Japanese and U.S. combatants and Japanese civilians died in the Battle of Okinawa, which lasted from May through June in 1945.
