Hitachi, Canon, Matsushita tie up in flat-panel business

Matsushita to launch world's largest plasma TV in Japan

TOKYO, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said it will begin taking orders on Sept. 1 for its newly developed 103-inch plasma TV, which is the world's largest flat-panel TV, for delivery on the Japanese market. The made-to-order TV unveiled at a pres conference in Tokyo on July 19 has a panel measuring 2.3 meters by 1.2 meters and is expected to retail for 6 million yen (about $51,000).

Sharp to quadruple LCD panel output

TOKYO, Japan - Sharp Corp. President Katsuhiko Machida said in Tokyo on Jan. 11 that his company will spend an additional 200 billion yen to quadruple the production capacity of its liquid crystal display panel factory in Kameyama, Mie Prefecture. The capital spending will enable the factory to produce 22 million LCD panels a year, starting in fiscal 2008.

Matsushita boosts monthly PDP output capacity to 150,000 units

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said Dec. 16 it has boosted its monthly plasma display panel production capacity to 150,000 units from 90,000 units, becoming the largest Japanese PDP producer. The firm has expanded capacity at its second PDP plant (in photo) in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture, and other plants.

Hitachi, Matsushita, Toshiba agree on joint LCD panel venture
