Kanto Festival begins in Akita

AKITA, Japan - Men hold up poles decorated with paper lanterns during the annual Kanto Festival that began in the northern Japanese city of Akita on Aug. 3. Kanto literally means a pole with lanterns. The lanterns are arranged in a way so as to look like an ear of rice. Some 1.3 million people are expected to visit the city to watch the four-day festival.

Tohoku Rokkon Festival

SENDAI, Japan - Nebuta float (front) from Aomori Prefecture and ''Kanto'' lanterns (back) from Akita Prefecture are exhibited at the Sendai city office in Miyagi Prefecture on July 16, 2011, the first day of the two-day Tohoku Rokkon (six souls) Festival.
