Boom returns to Atami, thanks to rising fuel prices
ATAMI, Japan - Sun Beach at Atami spa town in the Izu Peninsula is crowded with holidaymakers in a photo taken Aug. 5. According to travel agent JTB, the occupancy rate at inns and hotels in Atami rose 19 percent in July from a year earlier. Travel analysts believe high fuel costs have prompted many Japanese to give up overseas summer vacations or long-distance domestic travel. Atami, an hour or so by express train from Tokyo, is the nearest spa summer resort for Tokyoites.
