Sapporo makes beer from barley descending from space grown plants

NASU, Japan - Staffers at Sapporo Breweries Ltd.'s Nasu plant in Tochigi Prefecture put into pots barley descending from plants grown in outer space on Oct. 2, beginning to produce beer using the barley in the world's first-ever such undertaking. The brew will be completed by early November.

      TOKYO, Japan - A woman holds two bottles of Space Barley beer from Sapporo Breweries Ltd. on Dec. 2, the world's first beer made with barley descending from plants grown inside the International Space Station. Sapporo said the same day it will hold tastings of Sapporo Space Barley in January, inviting a total of 30 couples through a lottery to the events at the company's six plants from Hokkaido to Oita Prefecture. The space brew is not available for sale.
