Ex-air force general calls for debate on nuclear deterrent

TOKYO, Japan - Former Air Self-Defense Force Chief of Staff Toshio Tamogami speaks at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan in Tokyo on Dec. 1. Tamogami, who was fired as ASDF chief on Oct. 31 over his controversial essay justifying Japan's wartime aggression, called for an open debate on whether Japan should acquire nuclear weapons, arguing that such a debate in itself would enhance the country's nuclear deterrence.
