UNRWA member urges Israel to lift blockades on Gaza border

GAZA, Palestinian Authority - Yoshiko Hasumi (R), a Japanese staff member of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, talks to a group of children in Gaza on Jan. 23. Hasumi, who joined the UNRWA in October 2007, urged Israel to lift the blockades on the border between Israel and the Palestinian Authority during an interview with Kyodo News, saying the blockades prevent Palestinians from obtaining various materials necessary to reconstruct buildings such as houses, schools and hospitals that were damaged by Israeli attacks. ''Reconstruction of Gaza would not make progress unless materials can come in,'' Hasumi said.
