No. of red-crowned cranes in Hokkaido surpasses 1,000
KUSHIRO, Japan - Red-crowned cranes, designated as a Japanese special natural monument, gather at a feeding place in the village of Tsurui, Hokkaido, on Feb. 13. Local government research at 137 sites in 17 municipalities on Jan. 23 detected 1,065 cranes, the second-largest number since the survey was initiated in 1952.
