Bridge in Lake Nukabira in Hokkaido appears as lake freezes

KAMISHIHORO, Japan - Photo taken Feb. 23 shows a bridge, which usually sinks in the artificial Lake Nukabira, showing up above the frozen lake in winter. The 130-meter bridge, built in 1937 as part of the Shihoro railway line, sank in the Nukabira Dam lake in 1956. Water levels in the lake vary season by season as a result of the amount of water to be released for electric generation, giving a chance for the bridge to appear above the lake.

Kushiro's winter attraction: SL train trip on Kushiro wetland

KUSHIRO, Japan - JR Hokkaido is offering a steam locomotive train service across the Kushiro wetland during the winter season as a tourist attraction in eastern Hokkaido. The photo shows a SL train crossing a bridge over the frozen Kushiro River. The inaugural run Jan. 19 on the 224-seat SL train between Kushiro Station and Yukawa Onsen Station was sold out, JR officials say. The SL train service will run through mid-March.

Mt. Usu continues emitting smoke

TOYA, Japan - Smoke continues to escape from a crater on the western part of Mt. Usu in southwestern Hokkaido on April 4, five days since the volcano's first eruption after a 23-year sleep. Ash released from the mountain's numerous craters obscures nearby Lake Toya and its hot-spring resort town (at bottom of photo).
