Scandal-tainted Asashoryu calls it quits

TOKYO, Japan - People at an electronics retail store in Tokyo watch TV programs reporting the retirement of Mongolian yokozuna (grand champion) Asashoryu on Feb. 4, 2010. Asashoryu, whose real name is Dolgorsuren Dagvadorj, announced his retirement in the wake of a recent scandal in which he was alleged to have seriously injured a man in a drunken rampage.

Sumo: Ex-yokozuna Kitanofuji dies at 82

Yokozuna Kitanofuji performs his ring-entering ritual at a grand sumo tournament in January 1971 in Tokyo. The 10-time tournament champion, whose real name was Katsuaki Takezawa and who mentored two grand champions including the legendary Chiyonofuji before becoming a popular TV sumo pundit, died on Nov. 12, 2024, at the age of 82, according to media.
