Statute of limitations for 1995 shooting runs out

Police suspect that a man in Japan also employed the "Luffy" online username to organize a string of robberies in the country, in addition to the alleged ringleader who is currently detained in the Philippines, sources close to the matter said Saturday. Japanese police have requested that the four men in Manila be transferred to Japan, after obtaining arrest warrants for fraud. The police plan to investigate the possible involvement of the four men in the spate of robberies since last year. According to Japan's National Police Agency, there have been at least 20 cases of theft and robbery in 14 prefectures since last year, including a murder-robbery at the home of 90-year-old Kinuyo Oshio in the city of Komae in western Tokyo on Jan. 19. Over 30 suspects have been arrested in connection with the crimes.

Cult-slain victim's son speaks after high court hearing

TOKYO, Japan - Minoru Kariya, son of Tokyo notary Kiyoshi Kariya who was abducted and killed by the AUM Shinrikyo cult in 1995, meets the press in Tokyo on Dec. 16, 2014, after the first appeal court hearing on former senior AUM member Makoto Hirata's alleged involvement in this and other criminal cases. Father of slain British woman visits police to inquire on case

CHIBA, Japan - Holding a photo of his slain daughter Lindsay, William Hawker of Britain sobs after a visit to the Gyotoku police station in Chiba Prefecture on Sept. 16 to inquire about the police investigation into the murder, which took place in March last year. Hawker's T-shirt is imprinted with the photo of the murder suspect, Tatsuya Ichihashi. Lindsay, a 22-year-old English-language teacher, was found murdered in Ichihashi's apartment in Ichikawa.
