'Samurai' parade marks 150th year of Japan ship's arrival in U.S.

SAN FRANCISCO, United States - A ''samurai'' parade takes place in San Francisco on April 18, 2010. The event was held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the arrival in the United States of the Kanrin Maru, the first Japanese warship to cross the Pacific to mark Japan's emergence from more than two centuries of isolation.

The United States has returned the materials after research. Internal documents of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, or AFIP show that organ samples and medical records of more than 1,200 babies of Japanese survivors of atomic bombings, born dead or who died shortly after birth, were sent to the United States for radiation research.

John Brooke who had helped the crewmembers during their difficult voyage 145 years ago. Gomi, 82, is a great-granddaughter of Kanrin Maru's Captain Katsu Kaishu.

                  SAN FRANCISCO, United States - Japanese yachtsman Kenichi Horie offers flowers at the tombstone of former San Francisco Mayor George Christopher on the outskirts of San Francisco on July 18, one day after completing a two-month solo voyage across the Pacific. Christopher, who died in September 2000, welcomed Horie as a hero in 1962 when he first accomplished the trans-Pacific solo voyage although he did not have a passport or visa.

                    TOKYO, Japan - Holding a miniature model of his new yacht, Japanese sailor Kenichi Horie tells a news conference Feb. 21 he will attempt another solo voyage to the United States by yacht beginning in May 2002, 40 years after he first successfully sailed across the Pacific. Horie, 62, said he will dedicate his trip to the late San Francisco Mayor George Christopher, who allowed him to enter the U.S. upon arrival in San Francisco in 1962.
