Tokunoshima islanders step up U.S. base opposition
KAGOSHIMA, Japan - (From L) Isen Mayor Akira Okubo, Amagi Mayor Kosuke Ohisa and Tokunoshima Mayor Hideki Takaoka from Tokunoshima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, protest against Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's proposal that the island host some functions of a U.S. Marine base in nearby Okinawa during a rally May 8, 2010, in Kagoshima. Some 5,000 people took part in the protest a day after the mayors rejected the idea in a meeting with Hatoyama in Tokyo.
