16th anniversary of Great Hanshin Earthquake
NISHINOMIYA, Japan - People offer a silent prayer around a clock stopped at 5:46 a.m. on Jan. 17, 1995, the time the Great Hanshin Earthquake struck the area, in the western Japanese city of Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, on the morning of Jan. 17, 2011, the 16th anniversary of the disaster. The quake claimed the lives of 6,434 and imposed many challenges still remaining in the region.
