Cherry trees along Potomac River
TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken in March 2009 shows cherry trees planted along the Potomac River in Washington, which Tokyo gave as a gift to the United States in 1912 and which have become a symbol of friendship between the two countries. The U.S. National Park Service plans to send Japan 144 cuttings from the original trees as part of projects underway for the run-up to the 100th anniversary of the gift to Washington in 2012.
