Saving power in Japan
TOKYO, Japan - A sign at the entrance of a branch of major supermarket chain Aeon Co. shows a change in business hours during the summer, July 1 to Sept. 22, during which time the store will open at 8 a.m. instead of the usual 9 a.m., in Tokyo's Edogawa Ward, on July 1, 2011. Many companies and shops in Japan have adopted summer hours as the government started restricting electricity consumption by large-lot users in eastern Japan the same day to avert power shortages in the wake of the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster.
