Beef contaminated with radioactive cesium

NAGOYA, Japan - Local public health officials in Aichi Prefecture place beef, in which radioactive cesium has been detected, in a bag on July 15, 2011. Concern over tainted meat reaching market was heightened by a Tokyo metropolitan government announcement that radioactive cesium at levels exceeding the safety limit had been found in beef from cattle shipped from a farm in Asakawa, Fukushima Prefecture, to a slaughterhouse in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture.

Beef of several cows shipped from the area near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station was recently found to contain high levels of radioactive cesium. Some believe the cows had eaten straw saturated with cesium released by the power station.

TOKYO, Japan - Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Ritsuo Hosokawa eats dishes using vegetables from Fukushima Prefecture, where the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is located, to assure the safety of the products at a cafeteria in the building housing the health and other ministries in Tokyo on April 12, 2011. The cafeteria started on the day to use some vegetables from the prefecture, such as tomatoes and cucumbers, whose shipments are not restricted by the government in support of Fukushima farmers hit by radiation fears.

Most cow-cloning sites positive on shipping beef to market

TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken in December 2002 shows cloned cows at a farm in the town of Oshimizu, Ishikawa Prefecture. A new survey by Kyodo News revealed that 33 of the 40 facilities producing or raising cloned cows in Japan are positive about sending such cows to the market for human consumption. The government is expected to lift a ban on the distribution of beef from cloned cows after the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry compiles a report on the safety of such beef, probably in the spring. If the ban is lifted, it will be the first such case in the world.
