7th month anniv. of Japan tsunami

ISHINOMAKI, Japan - The gymnasium of an elementary school in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, stands empty on Oct. 11, 2011, after the departure of all of the evacuees who were staying there. Ishinomaki shut down about 20 remaining evacuation centers the same day, including the gymnasium that accommodated over 1,500 evacuees at one point, seven months after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Fukushima school set to reopen after temporary evacuation

TAMURA, Japan - Teachers at Furumichi Elementary School in the Miyakoji district of Tamura, Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, prepare decorations on March 31, 2014, for a first-day-of-school ceremony to be held April 7. The school, which had been relocated to a temporary campus in the aftermath of the March 2011 meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex, is set to reopen at its original location as the government lifted an evacuation order for the area on April 1.

Disaster-hit school in Ishinomaki, Japan

ISHINOMAKI, Japan - The remains of Okawa Elementary School in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, remain deserted on Feb. 25, 2014. At the school, 84 students, teachers and staff members died in the March 2011 tsunami. U.S. college students pray for American victim

SENDAI, Japan - A group of students from Randolph-Macon College in Virginia visit the municipal Inai Junior High School in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, on Jan. 17, 2014, after praying in the city for Taylor Anderson, a graduate of the college who was killed in the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami while working as an English teacher in Ishinomaki. 2 and a half years after quake
