Tohoku Electric launches mega-solar power plant

AOMORI, Japan - Tohoku Electric Power Co. launches commercial operation of a mega-solar power plant in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, on Dec. 20, 2011. The utility's first commercial solar power plant with a capacity of 1,500 kilowatts can produce about 1.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually to cover 500 households. It consists of some 10,000 solar cell panels installed on a 50,000-square-meter site.

The plant on an 800,000-square-meter site consists of a 50-megawatt photovoltaic power generator and a 6-MW wind power generator, covering the power consumption of about 19,000 households.
