Japan's last nuclear reactor goes offline

The building housing the No. 3 reactor can be seen to the right. The photo was taken shortly after the reactor, Japan's last operating commercial nuclear reactor, went offline for mandatory routine maintenance, leaving the nation without electricity generated by nuclear power for the first time in 42 years, in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear crisis triggered by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
