10 Japanese land on disputed Senkakus

TOKYO, Japan - Nationalist demonstrators display Japanese flags on Uotsuri Island, the largest of a chain of Japan-controlled islets known as the Senkaku Islands in Japan, in the East China Sea on the morning of Aug. 19, 2012. Some are seen hoisted on a lighthouse. Ten Japanese nationals landed earlier that morning on the island in the chain which is also claimed by China.

                      Japan GSDF opens new garrison in southern Japan

                      People stage a rally on March 16, 2023, near a Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force garrison that opened the same day on Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan. Some 570 or fewer GSDF members will be stationed on the island near the disputed Senkaku Islands and Taiwan, apparently in response to China's intensifying military activities in nearby waters.
