Tsunami-hit city makes use of Facebook

RIKUZENTAKATA, Japan - An employee of the city government of Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, uses Facebook as part of his work at the city hall on Nov. 21, 2012. The northeastern Japan city hit hard by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami has been successful in gathering attention and support from around Japan and the world by making use of Facebook.

Foundations of houses to be preserved as disaster memorial

The municipal government has decided to preserve them as a disaster memorial. A damaged school, seen in the background, is also to be preserved in its current state.

After being created in the Hakuho period from the 7th to 8th centuries, the statue was burned in a fire leaving only its head, a national treasure.
