Restoring historic buildings

TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken in August 2012 shows an outlet of sake brewery Otokoyama Honten Co., which was damaged by the March 2011 tsunami, in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan. The World Monuments Fund in New York said on March 7, 2013, that it will give $250,000 to rebuild seven historic buildings in Kesennuma, including the Okotoyama Honten store.

Japan's empress turns 80

Suit over pupils' deaths in tsunami

ISHINOMAKI, Japan - Photo shows Okawa Elementary School in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, on May 19, 2014. A hearing was held the same day at the Sendai District Court in the prefecture, after relatives of 23 pupils at the school who died in the earthquake and tsunami disaster of March 11, 2011, filed a damages suit in March. At the school, 74 of the 108 pupils died or remain unaccounted for, and 10 of the 13 teachers and school officials died in the disaster.

Tsunami-hit high school bld. likely to be preserved
