IZUMO, Japan - The shrine deity, protected with silk cloth, is carried by priests to the main hall at Izumo Taisha in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, on May 10, 2013, in a special ceremony called Honden Senza Sai. The ceremony was held for the first time in 60 years at the Shinto shrine, one of the most important in Japan, after the completion of renovations to the main hall, a national treasure.

        NARA, Japan - The Shosoin repository, a national treasure in Nara, western Japan, is shown to the press on Oct. 21, 2014, following the completion of its first major repairs in about 100 years. Featuring an "azekura" log-cabin style with a raised floor, the treasure house will be open to the public from Oct. 25 for the first time since 2011.

          NIIGATA, Japan - The sake brewing tradition of "koshiki-daoshi" (literally pulling down a rice-steaming pot) is held in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, central Japan, on Feb. 22, 2014, for the first time in 17 years. In the rite, rice wine makers dress up with equipment used for producing sake and report to brewery owners the completion of brewing preparations. The tradition was resumed 10 years after a major earthquake in the area caused extensive damage including to sake breweries.
