Abe announces sales tax hike
TOKYO, Japan - Representatives of the government and the ruling coalition parties hold a meeting at the prime minister's office in Tokyo on Oct. 1, 2013. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (2nd from R) told the meeting that the government will raise Japan's sales tax rate in April 2014 to 8 percent from the current 5 percent as planned, marking the first increase in the politically sensitive tax in 17 years.
