Wintering eagles gather on drift ice in Shiretoko, Japan
RAUSU, Japan - Eagles passing the winter in Shiretoko, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Hokkaido, northern Japan, gather over drift ice against the backdrop of the morning sun rising from behind the Russian-held Kunashiri Island. The brown bird in the center below is a white-tailed sea eagle designated as a national natural treasure, as are other birds known as Steller's sea eagles.
