Russia allegedly hack Asian, Western firms

TOKYO, Japan - The former KGB headquarters in Moscow is photographed in October 2011. The Russian government has been linked to cyber attacks on Asian, American and European companies for alleged economic gains, according to a report released in January 2014 by CrowdStrike Inc., a U.S. cybersecurity firm. An expert said persons connected to the Soviet KGB are suspected to be involved in cyber crimes.

Moody's Investors Service Inc. said the same day it has downgraded its credit rating for Japanese government bonds by one notch from Aa2 to Aa3. ''Over the past five years, frequent changes in administrations have prevented the government from implementing long-term economic and fiscal strategies into effective and durable policies,'' the U.S. rating agency said in its report.

        LONDON, Britain - Photo shows a file containing confidential papers created in 1980. The British National Archives disclosed some Foreign Office papers on Dec. 30, 2010, that revealed the British government was considering encouraging Tokyo to join European countries and the United States in imposing sanctions on Iran following the taking of American hostages at the U.S. Embassy in Iran in November 1979, as doing so without Japan would only give it enhanced business opportunities in the Middle Eastern country. Japan imposed sanctions on the country in June 1980 and lifted them in January 1981 after the release of the hostages.

          WASHINGTON, United States - An expert in Japanese religion at the General Headquarters (GHQ) that ruled Japan after World War II recommended sparing Tokyo's controversial Yasukuni Shrine in January 1947, according to documents (copies in photo) Kyodo News obtained on Aug. 13. William Woodard, then a leading authority on Japanese religion, said in a report that the shrine ''should be allowed to continue to exist,'' as its elimination ''would accomplish very little and would create additional problems.''
