MSDF seaman's suicide

TOKYO, Japan - The mother of a crewmember of a Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer answers a reporter's question in front of the Tokyo High Court in Tokyo on April 23, 2014, after the court ordered the Japanese government and a former MSDF officer to pay some 73 million yen in damages for the seaman's suicide in 2004, significantly more than the 4.4 million yen awarded in a lower court ruling. The high court said the suicide was predictable and could have been avoided, based on investigation documents, which detailed the assaults and threats on the seaman.

The Tokyo District Court on Sept. 26, 2013, ordered Apple to pay 330 million yen in damages to Japanese inventor Norihiko Saito for a patent infringement involving the U.S. firm's iPod music player. The patent that Saito's company applied for in 1998 covers technology for the Click Wheel controller that Apple adopted for the music player in Japan in 2004, the presiding judge said in a ruling.
