Tomioka Silk Mill added to UNESCO list

TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken May 31, 2014 shows tourists flocking to the Tomioka Silk Mill, a historic factory building in Tomioka, Gunma Prefecture. The mill and related sites in the prefecture were added to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list in June 2014.

      HACHINOHE, Japan, Aug. 1 Kyodo - Decorated floats are lined up in Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on July 31, 2024, as the annual Hachinohe Sansha Taisai festival kicks off. The floats, each 10 meters high and 8 meters wide, will be paraded for three days starting the following day as part of the five-day festival, which dates back around 300 years and, in 2016, was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.         A village idol artist makes large color masks modeled after Purulia Chhau dance masks (Purulia Chhau dance is listed on UNESCO's World Heritage list of dances) of goddesses, animals, and rakshasas (humanoid demons or unrighteous spirits) like Hindu mythology characters out of clay. The 88-page all-color album has drawn massive orders with the proceeds financing the rebuilding of the castle.
