Tree branches used to reinforce ground around Heijo Palace
NARA, Japan - Remains of tree branches and leaves laid on the bottom of what used to be a river in an area west of the remains of the 8th-century Heijo Palace in Nara, western Japan, are seen on July 4, 2014. The Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties has unearthed the remains of the branches used to reclaim land and reinforce the foundation.
