Lafcadio Hearn gallery opens in Greece

LEFKADA, Greece - Bon Koizumi, a great grandson of Lafcadio Hearn, a writer who devoted his life to introducing Japan to the West in the 19th century, speaks at the opening on July 4, 2014, of a gallery on the Greek island of Lefkada. Launched on the 110th anniversary of Hearn's death, the new gallery at Hearn's birthplace exhibits his memorabilia including a manuscript of "Kwaidan" (1904), a collection of old Japanese ghost stories and one of Hearn's most famous works.

    LEFKADA, Greece - Japanese actor Shiro Sano (L) recites passages from works of Lafcadio Hearn, aka Koizumi Yakumo, an author originally from Lefkada, Greece, with music played by Japanese guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto on the Greek island on July 5, 2014, to mark the 110th anniversary of Hearn's birth. Both Sano and Yamamoto are from Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, western Japan, where Hearn spent his later life.

      LEFKADA, Greece - Visitors examine the exhibits at a gallery commemorating Lafcadio Hearn, a writer who devoted his life to introducing Japan to the West in the 19th century, on the Greek island of Lefkada on July 4, 2014. Launched on the 110th anniversary of the writer's death, the gallery opened at the birthplace of Hearn, who was born to an Irish father and a Greek mother in 1850 and worked as a journalist in the United States before going to Japan in 1890. He became a naturalized Japanese before he died in 1904.

        LEFKADA, Greece - A Seiwa Bunraku puppet from Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, cuts the tape on July 4, 2014, to celebrate the opening of a memorial museum for Meiji-period writer Yakumo Koizumi, whose real name was Lafcadio Hearn, on Greece's Lefkada island where he was born in 1850. He moved to Japan and lived in such places as Kumamoto and Matsue.
