River floodgate blamed for sagging eel population

TSUKUBA, Japan - A floodgate at the mouth of the Hitachi-Tonegawa River flowing from Lake Kasumigaura in Kamisu, Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, is shown on Aug. 19, 2014. The floodgate reportedly blocks eel fry from entering the lake, contributing to a decline in the eel population.
