Japan city to buy land owned by Yoko Ono's grandfather

FUKUOKA, Japan - The gate shown in this file photo taken in Yanagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, southwestern Japan, in October 2014 is part of the remains of a residence owned by Eijiro Ono, grandfather of Japanese artist Yoko Ono, widow of former Beatle John Lennon. The Yanagawa city office has set aside a budget to purchase the land of the residence and turn it into a park.

            MINO, Japan - Local people celebrate the registration of Japanese traditional handmade paper called "washi" as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO on Nov. 27, 2014, at the city office building of Mino, where one of the registered washi products called "Homminoshi" is produced, in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. Confetti made of Homminoshi was used in the celebration.

              Renowned actor Ken Takakura dies at 83

The couple divorced in 1971. Takakura, winner of multiple Japanese Academy Awards and one of the country's most recognized film stars, died on Nov. 10, 2014, at a Tokyo hospital, his office said Nov. 18. He was 83.
