Art museum for local painter opens in northwest Japan

SENDAI, Japan - A newly completed art museum remodeled from an old community center opens in Kamaishi, Miyagi Prefecture, on Nov. 22, 2014, to exhibit drawings by the late local painter Jun Sugimura who mainly painted landscapes in the northeastern Japan city.

                HIROSHIMA, Japan - A letter written by poet and painter Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934) to Shigeru Kuzuhara, an editor, is displayed at a museum in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, western Japan, on Dec. 6, 2014. The letter is one of Takehisa's 20 writings newly discovered by Kuzuhara's grandson Makoto at his family home in Tokyo in June.

                      MATSUE, Japan - A foldable "shoji" screen, used as window blinds, made from "Sekishu washi" traditional handmade paper in Shimane Prefecture is exhibited at the Sekisho Art Museum in Hamada in the western Japanese prefecture in November 2014. Japanese "washi" was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list the same month.
