The celebration was held in the historic Erbil Citadel in the city center of Erbil. The Kurdish Peshmerga forces toured the city center with a 60-meter-long flag made by young volunteers. In 1999, the region's parliament adopted a flag for the region in accordance with a legislative law, and then set December 17 as the official day to honor the flag.
