Sand Festa kicks off in Kagoshima

MINAMISATSUMA, Japan, May 1 Kyodo - Photo taken May 1, 2015, shows a sand sculpture themed on an advance in railway technology, with a steam locomotive (L) emerging from a tunnel and a shinkansen bullet train (R) climbing skyward, displayed at the annual Sand Festa that began the same day near a dune in Minamisatsuma, Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan. About 100 sculptures created by artists and local citizens will be shown during the festival lasting until May 31.

              KYOTO, July 1 Kyodo - Photo taken July 1, 2015, in Kyoto shows one of the original front cars of the shinkansen bullet train, being towed on a trailer, heading to the Kyoto Railway Museum for exhibition. The first front cars, nicknamed "button nose," were operated from 1964 to 2008. The museum will open in the spring of 2016.

                    TSURU, Japan - A screen monitor inside a Central Japan Railway Co. L0 series maglev train shows the train running at a speed of 500 km/h during a demonstration ride on Nov. 13, 2014. About 100 people took part in the 30-minute ride on a test line of 42.8 kilometers between Fuefuki and Uenohara in Yamanashi Prefecture, central Japan.                       FUKUOKA, Japan - A model train diorama is installed on a Sanyo Shinkansen "Kodama" bullet train at West Japan Railway Co.'s rail yard in Fukuoka Prefecture on July 2, 2014. The renovated train will run between Shin-Osaka and Hakata stations from July 19 through March 2015, making one roundtrip a day.
