Hitachi to roll out world's 1st Blu-ray disc video camera

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. will put the world's first Blu-ray disc digital video cameras (photo) on sale on the domestic market Aug. 30 and on overseas markets in October. The video cameras are capable of recording full high-definition video on an 8-centimeter Blu-ray disc which has five times more recording capacity than a regular DVD.

                OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. will release on June 10 a personal computer memory disk drive compatible with the specifications of the ''Blu-ray Disc,'' a next-generation ultra-large storage capacity DVD. The drive (L) -- 14.6 centimeters wide, 4.1 cm high and 19 cm long -- is designed to be fitted into a standard-sized CD drive slot on the core tower portion of a desktop computer. The memory capacity of a 50-gigabyte version of a Blu-ray disk (R) provides a capacity nearly 10 times that of a 4.7-gigabyte DVD. The new drive is compatible with both the 50-gigabyte and 25-gigabyte Blu-ray disks.

Casio said it made its palm-sized camera smaller by using a ceramic lens for the first time. It said the ceramic lens has a higher refractive index than glass lens. The camera is a 3.2 mega pixel digital camera equipped with a 2.8 times optical zoom lens. It measures 88 x 57 x 16.7 millimeters. The thinnest part is 14.2 mm. (Kyodo)

                      OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. unveiled June 30 what it calls the world's first DVD recorder that supports single-side, dual-layer Blu-ray Discs with a maximum capacity of 50 gigabytes. The DMR-E700BD, the high-end model of Matsushita's DIGA DVD recorder series, will be available in Japan on an open-price basis on July 31. (Kyodo)
