Takanohana serves bowls of ''chanko'' to quake victims

NAGAOKA, Japan - Retired yokozuna Takanohana (L) serves bowls of ''chanko'' to residents of quake-hit Yamakoshi Village now taking shelter in temporary-built houses in Nagaoka on Dec. 26. ''Chanko,'' a dish routinely eaten by sumo wrestlers, is made by boiling chicken, fish and vegetables in soup.

TOKYO, Japan - Mongolian yokozuna Hakuho (L) of the Miyagino stable marks the end of the year with a rice-cake making event to prepare for the new year after having the last practice of the year on Dec. 30, 2009, at the stable in Tokyo's Sumida Ward. Rice cakes, traditionally made by pounding steamed rice by pestle in a wooden mortal, are offered during the New Year's holidays.
