U.N. to take lead in tsunami relief, makes $1 bil. appeal
JAKARTA, Indonesia - U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan speaks to reporters at an emergency summit in Jakarta on Jan. 6. At the meeting, Annan appealed for almost $1 billion dollars in initial relief to cover the humanitarian emergency needs of an estimated 5 million people affected by the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami.
