Tomioka Silk Mill registered as World Heritage

TOMIOKA, Japan - Citizens of Tomioka, Gunma Prefecture, celebrate in front of the illuminated Tomioka Silk Mill on the night of June 21, 2014, after the UNESCO World Heritage Committee decided to add the mill, a historic factory building symbolizing Japan's industrialization from the 19th century, to the World Cultural Heritage list.

        Nat'l council to hand down 'washoku' culture to be launched

        TOKYO, Japan - Isao Kumakura (C), president of Shizuoka University of Art and Culture, and others in Tokyo on Dec. 8, 2014, announce they will establish a national council for passing the tradition and culture of "washoku" Japanese cuisine to the next generation. The council is expected to start its activities in April 2015. Washoku was registered in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2013.

                MINO, Japan - Local people celebrate the registration of Japanese traditional handmade paper called "washi" as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO on Nov. 27, 2014, at the city office building of Mino, where one of the registered washi products called "Homminoshi" is produced, in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. Confetti made of Homminoshi was used in the celebration.

                      NAGOYA, Japan - During a ceremony in Nagoya, central Japan, on Nov. 9, 2014, Irina Bokova (L), secretary general of UNESCO, and Japan's education minister Hakubun Shimomura pose with a certificate to add "washoku" traditional Japanese cuisine to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The intergovernmental panel of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization last December approved adding traditional Japanese cuisine to the list.
