The ruins were a neolithic city built about 4,300 years ago and abandoned roughly 300 years later during the Xia Dynasty (2100-1600 BC), the first dynasty in China described in historical chronicles. Archaeologists have unearthed high-grade cemeteries in the core area of Shimao Site. At present, 15 vertical pit tombs dating back about 4,000 years have been discovered. The discovery was one of China's top ten new archaeological discoveries that year.
