The ISGlobal study estimates that a third of deaths due to heat islands could be avoided if 30 percent of urban space was covered by trees. The Barcelona-based ISGlobal research center said that heat exposure during high summer temperatures is linked to premature death, cardiorespiratory diseases and hospital admissions. The researchers also pointed out that with increasing global warming and urban growth, the consequences of high temperatures in cities are expected to get worse in the future.
