Osama Rabie, head of the Suez Canal Authority, announced that the Suez Canal on Wednesday saw a record-high number of daily transits made by ships.
Rabie said that a total of 93 ships passed through the Suez Canal from both directions on Wednesday, with a total net tonnage of 4.4 million tonnes.
Linking the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea, the Suez Canal was officially opened for international navigation in 1869, serving as a lifeline for global seaborne trade. About 12 percent of the world's trade passes through the man-made canal.
According to data from the SCA, the canal posted a record-high annual revenue of 8 billion U.S. dollars in 2022 from the passage and transit of 23,851 ships.
