STORYLINE:
A set of water restrictions took effect on Tuesday in 224 municipalities in Catalonia, a region in northeastern Spain where water reserves have fallen to 27 percent due to lack of rain.
The measures impose a limit of 230 liters per person per day, as well as a 40 percent reduction in water use for agricultural purposes and a 15 percent reduction for industrial and recreational uses.
The measures will affect nearly 6 million people.
Watering public and private green spaces is prohibited, as is cleaning streets with potable water.
