Hanssen was arrested Sunday, February 18, 2001 and charged with committing espionage by providing highly classified national security information to Russia and the former Soviet Union. Hanssen was a veteran FBI counterintelligence Agen. - Robert Philip Hanssen, who received payments of $1.4 million in cash and diamonds for the information he gave the Soviet Union and Russia, has died, the Federal Bureau of Prisons announced Monday.
